Emerging Researchers and Students
A feature of this conference is a programme for emerging researcher and students organised by the Emerging Researchers Group (ERGO).
Features include:
- A lunchtime workshop on Career Planning in HSR
- Prizes for the best oral presentation and best poster
- Discounted registration rates (full-time students only)
ERGO is short for the Emerging Researchers Group and is the student/graduate chapter of the Health Services Research Association of Australia and New Zealand (HSRAANZ). It is a network of current masters and doctoral students as well as recent graduates (last 5 years) in Australia and New Zealand.

ERGO Lunchtime Session: Thursday 26 November Meet the Experts - Strategic Planning for a Career in Health Services Research.
ERGO is hosting a lunchtime “meet the experts” session for all interested researchers about strategically planning a career in health services research. The aim of the session is to provide some top tips for success from those who may be reviewing our job and grant applications. It will also include the opportunity to hear about one recent completer’s journey from Masters to PhD to Academic.

The event is free and open to members and non-members of the HSRAANZ. We’ll collect our lunches and bring them to a designated conference room for lunch on Thursday 26 November. Student Poster and Oral Presentation Competition
HSRAANZ is hosting a competition for oral and poster presentations by new and emerging researchers. After submitting your abstract through the normal process you will be sent an email asking if you wish to enter the competition. Posters and oral presentation will be judged during the meeting, and the winners for each category will be recognized at the closing ceremony.
Discounted Registration Rates
Full time students will be able to access discounted registration rates.
Guidelines for Poster/Oral Presentation Competition for New and Emerging Researchers
HSRAANZ Poster/ Oral Presentation Competition for emerging and new researchers at the upcoming 6th Health Services & Policy Research Conference.
Submission Deadline: Emerging researchers can nominate their work for inclusion in the competition up to 5:00 pm on Monday, 16 November 2009.
Description: The competition is for new and emerging researchers in Health Services Research. Poster and oral presentations that report the results of a research study completed by the applicant(s) will be judged on presentation, content, contribution to the project by the emerging researcher and originality.
There will be two prizes awarded: Best Oral Presentation and Best Poster Presentation.
Eligibility:
- Applicant(s) must be registered attendee of the 6th Health Services & Policy Research Conference.
- Emerging Researches are defined as individuals who either:
- Are currently enrolled in post-graduate study or
- Have completed their most recent post-graduate degree within the past 5 years.
NOTE: You do not have to be a member of the HSRAANZ to enter the competition.
- Only one entry per applicant(s).
- Poster exhibits or oral presentations must be the original work of the applicant(s) submitting the application (i.e. the applicant must be the first-named and presenting author).
- Posters previously exhibited or papers presented orally at another conference in Australasia are not eligible.
Poster/Oral Presentation Application Review
Upon receipt of the HSRAANZ Awards and Competitions application, a number will be assigned to the entry. For posters, this number will be displayed on or by the side of the poster.
Awards
The competition winners will be announced at the Closing Plenary Session on Friday, 27 November 2009.
The First Prize for the Oral Presentation will be awarded a prize of $250 and a Certificate indicating the Author(s) name, date, and title of the presentation.
The First Prize of the Poster Presentation will be awarded a prize of $100 and a Certificate indicating the Author(s) name, date, and title of the presentation.
If the winning entries were submitted as a group entry, the monetary award will be awarded to the primary author.

RESULTS FROM 2007 Auckland Conference
ERGO Best Presentation Award Winner at 2007 HSRAANZ Conference:
First prize in the best poster/oral presentation competition for New and Emerging Researchers at the Auckland Conference was presented to Helen Dickinson, from the University of Birmingham. Helen's presentation entitled Evaluating UK Health and Social Care Partnerships: the POET approach" was judged the best of the presentations and posters delivered by emerging researchers at the conference and Helen was awarded a $250 prize.
2nd place went to Dr Catherine Joyce from Monash University for her paper on "New directions for health workforce policy: a complex systems perspective". Catherine's paper was co authored by Professor Just Stoelwinder.
Marlene Eggert from the Australian National University was awarded 3rd place for her paper "A Behavioural Economics Perspective on Nurse Employment Policy" co-authored by Dr Thomas Faunce.
